Moving from the crowd to the committed

Lk 14:25-35
1. Love Jesus more than our family.  v25-26 Hate- to love less or a chosen preference. To be a committed follower we must love Him above everyone else. Our number 1 relationship we must have right is our relationship with God.
2. Love Jesus more than ourselves. v26-27, 28, 31 Carry your cross: all of their hopes, dreams, etc was behind them as they carried their cross to their death. Make sure you are able to finish what you started, don't forget the cost of following Jesus. It's worth it.
3. Love Jesus more than our comforts. v33 There more stuff we own, the more our stuff has the potential to own us. We want to be less attached to worldly things and more attached to Godly things. Hold everything with open hands, be willing to give things up for God. Fall in love with Jesus so much that you realize it's all His anyway.

If I rely on the world, I become ineffective to Jesus. Come to Jesus DAILY and rely on Him alone.
It will cost you much to follow Jesus, but much more to reject Him.

Being A Good Neighbor

What does it look like to be a good neighbor?
1. Being a good neighbor can be risky and even dangerous. Lk 10:33-34 This road was very dangerous.
2. Being a good neighbor is most often inconvenient. Lk 10:31-35 The Samaritan went out of his way to help.
3. Being a good neighbor means loving people who are different than you. Lk 10:33 Jews and Samaritans didn't associate. Lk 9:51-54; Jn 4:9
4. Being a good neighbor requires action, not words. Lk 10:33-34; Jas 2:14-17; 1 Jn 3:16-17
5. Being a good neighbor is costly. Lk 10:34-35
6. Being a good neighbor means someone will take advantage of you.
7. You and I are not the good Samaritan in this story. Lk 10:36-37 Jesus is the Good Samaritan.

Repentance is beautiful

Luke 3:3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 3:2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
Luke 5:29–32 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

REPENTANCE IS A MAJOR THEME IN THE BIBLE.

REPENT- to turn from sin and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one's life.

*REASONS WE DON’T REPENT. *
Fear of change and consequences, we blame others, we are ashamed

A LACK OF REPENTANCE CAN LEAD TO ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS.

Genesis 3:8–10 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

Psalm 32:3–4 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.

RELIGION IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR REPENTANCE.

Luke 3:8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

REPENTANCE LEADS TO CHANGE.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
2 Corinthians 7:8–11 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while—yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
Luke 3:9–14 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” “What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
Acts 26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.

HOW DO I REPENT?
Psalm 139:23–24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 51:7–12 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

REPENT IS A BEAUTIFUL WORD!
Luke 15:20–23 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.

Revelation 3:19–20 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

It Is Well With My Soul

Mk 14:32-42 My soul is overwhelmed to the point of death.
How to help your soul:
1. Admit that you are overwhelmed. v34
2. Acknowledge the source that is overwhelming you. v34
3. Appeal to God for help, PRAY. v35. Honestly, trust, submission/relief.

Jesus brought his closest friends with him, and was open with them about what he was feeling.
v41-42 Jesus was calm now with the power and love of God and the Holy Spirit
Mt 11:28-29 Come to the Lord with our burdens

The Great Commission Sermon Points

Matthew 28:18-20 – “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Commission - an instruction, command, or duty given to a person or group of people.

IT’S BIGGER THAN YOU!

What we value determines what we do.

Matthew 28:18 – “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Matthew 28:19-20a – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…”

Disciple - a follower or student of a teacher, leader, or philosopher.

Matthew 28:19 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

Matthew 28:19 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 28:20a – “and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Why do we make disciples?
Because Jesus commands it
1 John 5:3-4 – “Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.”

Because it has eternal significance.
1 Peter 2:12 – “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”

Because there are people headed for hell.
Matthew 7:13-14 – “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”

Because there is great blessing and growth.
Matthew 28:20b – “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We Worship With Reckless Abandon Because We've Been Radically Saved

Mt 26:6-13, Mk 14, Jn 12
1. Worship is expensive and costly. Mt 26:7
2. Worship is the logical response for a changed life. Mt 26:6; Jn 12:2; 2 Cor 5:21
3. Worship will make some uncomfortable. Mt 26:8
4. Worship comes first. Mt 26:11. All of the other things we do must flow out of worship.
5. Worship honors Jesus. Mt 26:10, 12-13

Matthew 20:20-28

It's not about you. It's all about Him. Col 1:15-17; 2 Cor 5:15
We are spiritual contributors, not spiritual consumers. Often it becomes about getting something from Jesus, instead of being more like Jesus.
1. Lean into the one who first served you, Jesus. Be in the Word regularly. Surround yourself with those who love Jesus. Mt 20:26-28; Phil 2:5-7.
2. Jump in and start using your gifts. 1 Pet 4:10; Phil 2:9-11.

The Heart

Mt 15:1-9 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”  Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?  For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’  and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’  But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’  they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.  You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:   “ ‘These people honor me with their lips,  but their hearts are far from me.   They worship me in vain;  their teachings are merely human rules.’   ”
-Their motives were not pure
Heart - that part of us where our emotions and desires dwell. Gen 6:5; Jer 17:9; Prov 28:26a; Mt 15:18-19.
Our Creator cares about what we do, but more about the how and why we do it.

Three areas of struggle for our heart motivation (what drives us):
1. Status, success, approval. Mt 6:1
2. Selfishness: we give to get (why do I pray?) Jas 4:3; to make ourselves feel better Gal 6:1a
3. Security (we don't want to mess it up with God). Rom 5:1

What we should be motivated by: seek to honor God by pointing others to Jesus.
1. Guard your heart. Prov 4:23
2. Get into God's Word regularly. Heb 4:12-13
3. Put God first. Jas 4:8-9
4. Be honest with God. Ps 139:19-24
